Herman Melville, talented author of the classic, Moby Dick, once said, "We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men." As communities and small businesses across the country and world have come together during coronavirus pandemic despite distance, we have slowly been transformed to value the importance and great need of others within our lives. Because of this, communities are appreciating various groups of people who deserve our attention now more than ever. Here are four ways we’ve seen community members supported recently:
1. Recognizing Those Keeping Us Safe
First responders are known for their ability to act quickly while keeping members of our communities safe and sound. Their work often goes unnoticed as we live our daily lives. From banners to yard signs and even window graphics, communities have come together to show their support of those working daily on the frontline for the greater good.
2. Appreciating Those Keeping Us Healthy
Doctors, nurses, and a myriad of healthcare workers are doing the best they can to keep everyone safe during an unprecedented pandemic. As a result, many have joined forces to thank them in public ways on lawns, from balconies, across windows, near hospital entrances and even elevators to encourage our everyday heroes.
3. Acknowledging Those Keeping Our Bodies and Our Minds Fed
With essential workers providing support to communities across the world, we have been made aware just how necessary these roles are to our well-being. As a result, people have communicated their appreciation to those working in this capacity. We now know we could not make it without those who daily restock shelves, bag our groceries and make sure we have what we need to provide for our family and friends. In addition, we are increasingly more thankful for those who educate and inspire our children. In an effort to recognize these workers and say “thank you,” communities are showing their heartfelt support with signs.
4. Celebrating Those Who Could Use a Little Attention
Whether it's a high school senior who won’t have the opportunity to walk across the stage this year or a child experiencing a birthday during social distancing times, visually creative decorations are the latest way to celebrate these special milestones in their lives. Yard signs, banners and more, enable loved ones to still celebrate a special day or honor your graduate’s accomplishments so they know they are supported as they enter the next phase of their lives.
As many of us continue to walk a path we’ve not yet traveled, it has become evident how much we need each other in our communities across the world. Signs of thank you and recognition can help cultivate and promote an attitude of gratitude. As Margaret J. Wheatley shared, “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” In learning that we care about each other, our communities have been inspired to show support in visual ways.
